Wax Off: 4 Reasons to Consider Going Without

From cheapo balm sticks to pricier salves, one thing many lip saving formulas of all price points have in common is wax.

And though the bee-derived material is an improvement on petrochemicals, the go-to protective component of yore, there are still some downsides. Wax is an occlusive ingredient, so it has its benefits, says Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Marnie Nussbaum, M.D. F.A.A.D”, like keeping the skin moisturized and creating a barrier against damage. But do you need or want it? Read on to find out why you might want to go wax free and how eos has done just that with the next generation of lip balm, called eos Crystal. It might just change your life, or at least your look.

#1: Take the Weight Off

While waxes aren’t heavy per se, they can coat your mouth in a way that feels uncomfortable. Especially for anyone who favors barely-there makeup, a wax-laden balm may feel like a load on your lips. Rather than weighty waxes or petrolatum, eos lightened the load (but not the conditioning capabilities) for Crystal by turning to a combination of Shea butter and a blend of five pure oils for nourishment. The result? It feels like almost nothing on your lips.

#2: Lay Off the Lick

While the waxy film of a balm will go unnoticed by some people, there are others who may be driven to distraction. If you’re one of the latter, you may find that licking your lips regularly is a subconscious side effect. And in this case, your evaporating saliva can exacerbate any cracking or flaking so that you’re actually sabotaging the healing power of the balm. On the other hand, if you can’t feel anything on your lips in the first place, as is the case when wearing eos Crystal, you’ll never be tempted to engage in the aforementioned action.

#3: Part With Cloudiness

Prepping your mouth with balm helps lipstick go on smoother and appear more even. But if you’re using a wax-based option as a base, the color you layer on top will have a tendency to turn hazy (and feel a bit weighty when you consider lipstick already contains a fair amount of wax). When you start off with eos Crystal, not only do you get a weightless base for your lipstick, you also ensure your favorite shade stays true to what’s in the tube. Prefer to go bare-lipped? The total transparency of eos Crystal means your unadorned lips will look fuller, more natural and healthier.

#4: You Eat It

Wax is natural and as such consuming it won’t make you any worse for wear. But it’s been reported that over the course of a lifetime, a woman eats on average eight pounds of lipstick, gloss, balm or whatever she wears on her lips. And while you likely will never see or feel adverse effects from chowing down on wax, it’s something to consider when you choose what to slick on your lips. eos Crystal’s vegan formula hydrates with (clear) Shea butter and aloe, sunflower, castor, avocado and coconut oils, which actually sound pretty yummy.

#5: Just Dew It

Because eos Crystal is completely clear and free of pore-clogging waxes, it also works wonders as a sparkle-free highlighter in a pinch. Simply dab it onto the tops of your cheekbones, Cupid’s bow, and bridge of your nose to impart skin with a super-natural dewy effect and a kiss of moisture.
